The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) has been chosen by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to lead a new Center of Excellence focused on Arctic research. The Arctic Domain Awareness Center (ADAC-ARCTIC) will receive $46 million over ten years to support research and educational initiatives aimed at enhancing infrastructure and operational missions in the Arctic region.
Alaska's congressional delegation, including Senators Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski, along with Representative Mary Peltola, expressed their approval of the selection. They stated: “The great state of Alaska is the reason the United States is an Arctic nation. We applaud the selection of UAA as the location for the new Arctic Center of Excellence having strongly advocated for an Alaska institution to house the Arctic Domain Awareness Center with DHS."
The ADAC-ARCTIC aims to foster collaboration among government agencies, industry partners, local and indigenous communities, and academic institutions. It will bring together experts from fields such as cybersecurity, emergency management, and maritime security to advance homeland security efforts in the Arctic.
