U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan from Alaska has announced upcoming improvements in Social Security Administration (SSA) services for Alaskans. This follows discussions between Sen. Sullivan and SSA Commissioner Martin O’Malley. In a letter to Sen. Sullivan, Commissioner O’Malley detailed plans to increase virtual appointment days in the Mat-Su area, hire five new employees in Alaska, and start an awareness campaign about virtual SSA services. These changes are expected to be implemented next month.
Senator Sullivan stated, "My team and I have heard the frustrations of many Alaskans encountering unacceptable hurdles and delays as they try to schedule appointments and secure the Social Security benefits they are entitled to." He highlighted that Alaska's unique geographical challenges were a significant part of his discussions with Commissioner O'Malley. Sullivan commended O'Malley for understanding these challenges and making necessary policy adjustments.
Sullivan added that while these steps are crucial, further efforts are needed, particularly in establishing more field office locations in regions experiencing population growth like Mat-Su.
Currently, Alaska is served by three SSA field offices located in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau, along with five virtual appointment centers situated in Nome, Kodiak, Kenai, Ketchikan, and Wasilla.
