U.S. Senators Dan Sullivan and Tim Kaine have announced plans to introduce a bipartisan resolution recognizing Taiwan's dedication to democratic principles amid ongoing threats from the Chinese Communist Party. This development comes ahead of Taiwan's presidential and legislative elections scheduled for January 13.

Senator Sullivan emphasized the importance of U.S. support for Taiwan during this critical period, stating, "This is a volatile and potentially dangerous time." He highlighted the need for increased cross-strait deterrence, recalling his deployment with a Marine Corps task force during Taiwan's first presidential election when Beijing threatened military action.

Senator Kaine underscored Taiwan's role as a key democratic partner in the Indo-Pacific region. "Taiwan is a thriving democracy and one of our closest partners," he said, stressing that any interference by the Chinese Communist Party in the elections will not be tolerated.

The resolution has garnered support from several senators across party lines, including Tim Scott, Kevin Cramer, Chris Coons, John Cornyn, Eric Schmitt, Pete Ricketts, Lisa Murkowski, Mike Crapo, Ted Budd, Chris Van Hollen, Ted Cruz, Steve Daines, Thom Tillis, Todd Young, Jeff Merkley, Brian Schatz, Mitt Romney, Tammy Duckworth, Jeanne Shaheen, John Hoeven, Ed Markey Jacky Rosen Marsha Blackburn Rick Scott Cynthia Lummis Chuck Grassley Raphael Warnock Lindsey Graham Katie Britt Deb Fischer Ron Wyden Dick Durbin Catherine Cortez-Masto Kyrsten Sinema Cory Booker Joe Manchin

Companion legislation is expected to be introduced in the House by Representatives Gerry Connolly Mario Diaz-Balart Ami Bera Andy Barr

The resolution acknowledges Taiwan's successful transition to democracy since lifting martial law in 1987. It commends Taiwan for its free and fair elections and peaceful transfers of power between political parties. The document also highlights concerns about potential interference by China in the upcoming elections and reaffirms U.S. commitment to supporting Taiwan’s self-defense.
