U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan from Alaska announced a new task force aimed at tackling affordable housing challenges in the state, particularly in rural areas. The initiative is a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) and the Association of Alaska Housing Authorities (AAHA). This development follows a roundtable meeting organized by Senator Sullivan last August with HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge and community leaders.

Senator Sullivan emphasized the importance of housing as a foundation for community development and economic stability. "Housing is a catalyst for community development, good jobs, and pride in where you live, but affordable housing is out of reach for far too many Alaskans," he stated.

Colleen Dushkin, executive director of AAHA, expressed optimism about the partnership: “Through Senator Sullivan’s vision of the housing task force, we are thrilled to work with our federal partners and housing providers across the state.”

Bryan Butcher from the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation welcomed HUD's initiative: “The announcement about HUD’s taskforce to better understand Alaska is welcome.”

Brian Ridley of Tanana Chiefs Conference highlighted ongoing issues: “Housing continues to be the number one need in our communities."

Vivian Korthuis from the Association of Village Council Presidents also stressed housing's significance: "Affordable housing sits at the core of family security and human dignity."

In December, Sen. Sullivan introduced legislation alongside Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden to increase affordable housing supply through tax incentives targeted at middle-income earners.
