U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan has called on the Biden-Harris administration to enhance a global plastics treaty currently under negotiation at the United Nations. In a letter addressed to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Sullivan expressed concerns that the treaty might suffer from vague requirements and costly measures without providing effective solutions for plastic waste management.
Sullivan highlighted the need for a treaty that is "common-sense and future-looking," focusing on reducing single-use plastic demand, fostering technical innovation, and implementing measures to enhance plastic circularity. He urged the administration to work towards an agreement that the U.S. can support, aiming for a lasting solution to plastic pollution.
In parallel efforts in the House of Representatives, Dan Crenshaw led a similar initiative with 26 Republican colleagues joining his letter. The call from both chambers emphasizes the urgency of addressing plastic waste effectively through international cooperation.
Senator Sullivan has been actively involved in combating plastic pollution through legislative efforts such as the Save Our Seas (SOS) 2.0 Act, co-introduced with Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and enacted in December 2020. This law aims to eliminate plastic pollution and mitigate its environmental impacts.
