U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, along with Representative Mary Sattler Peltola, have expressed their approval of the federal disaster declaration for Juneau's floods that occurred in early August. This decision by President Biden follows efforts from Alaska's congressional delegation and local leaders to secure federal aid for residents affected by the flooding of Suicide Basin.

Senator Murkowski stated, "I am pleased by the federal disaster declaration to help the Juneau community recover from the flooding of Suicide Basin late this summer." She emphasized her support for Juneau as it deals with potential future flooding, noting the importance of the declaration for recovery.

Senator Sullivan described the damage from August's record-breaking floods as extensive but was thankful there were no fatalities. He acknowledged FEMA’s approval of Governor Dunleavy’s request for a disaster declaration and highlighted ongoing collaboration with FEMA Administrator Criswell. "These FEMA funds will allow critical federal funding to supplement the incredible state and local efforts that are already underway," he said. Sullivan also mentioned working with the Army Corps of Engineers on long-term solutions to prevent similar incidents caused by Mendenhall Glacier outburst flooding.

Representative Peltola shared her relief over the approved disaster declaration while recognizing that much work remains. She commended local efforts led by city authorities and Tlingit & Haida and stressed vigilance in ensuring prompt distribution of funds to Mendenhall Valley.
