#TBT: A musher and dog team approaching a jet plane in Alaska, 1960s. A retro mode of Alaskan transportation contrasts with an innovation in air transport, the commercial passenger jet.
The use of jets sped up travel to/from Alaska because pilots could now fly above difficult weather that piston-engined aircraft had to either fly through or avoid by circuitous routes. It was during this era that certain commercial flights to/from Alaska included an on-board saloon, fashion shows in the aisles, bingo games and even a piano player!
