20th Anniversary

#TBT. Today is the 20th anniversary of the 7.9 magnitude Denali earthquake that shook Alaska on Nov. 3, 2002.  Despite being so powerful, thankfully only one person was injured. The quake caused significant damage to some of Alaska’s roads, the Northway Airport, and the rural communities of #Slana, #MentastaLake, #Tetlin and #Northway

Our amazing crews worked around the clock to repair and restore 3,200 feet of the airport, which had one-foot heaves along the runway and crevices across the 5,100 foot paved surface. Our engineers immediately began inspecting bridges and roads across the state.

Alaska is the most seismically-active state, and looking back on events like this reminds us that we need to be prepared. Learn about earthquake preparation: https://www.ready.gov/earthquakes
