Both men and women experience a decline in bone density as they age, which can increase the risk of fractures and frailty. To address this issue, Sarah Lewis, a professor with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead an online class focusing on nutrition and exercise for bone health.

The session will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, via Zoom. The cost to attend is $10. Registration can be completed through an online form or by visiting https://bit.ly/BoneHealthClass. Participants will receive the Zoom link after registering.

Lewis plans to cover dietary strategies that support bone health and demonstrate exercises aimed at maintaining bone density and improving balance. She emphasized the importance of early prevention: “Women should understand these preventive strategies in their 30s and men in their 50s, but itʼs never too early or too late in life to improve bone health,” Lewis said.

For additional information about the class, Lewis can be contacted at sarah.lewis@alaska.edu or by phone at 907-455-2010.

Accommodation requests related to disabilities should be made five business days before the event by contacting Alda Norris at amnorris2@alaska.edu or calling 907-474-7120. Language access services are available free of charge for individuals with limited English proficiency upon request.

This program is supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
