Days after the U.S. Senate approved a $95 billion national security package, Senators Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island) are leading a bipartisan delegation to the Munich Security Conference. This event is recognized as a key forum for international security policy.
Senator Sullivan emphasized the importance of alliances, stating, “One of our greatest strengths relative to our adversaries—China, Russia, Iran, North Korea—is our vast network of allies.” He added that the conference provides an opportunity to reinforce these alliances and U.S. credibility while reminding NATO allies of their defense spending commitments.
Senator Whitehouse highlighted the significance of supporting transatlantic institutions: “It’s an honor to once again co-lead CODEL McCain to Munich to send the message that the United States Senate stands firmly with our allies and the transatlantic institutions.” He also mentioned efforts in supporting Ukraine, tackling corruption, and addressing climate change.
The delegation’s trip is named CODEL McCain in tribute to late Senator John McCain of Arizona. The conference will gather nearly 500 leaders from various sectors worldwide. It will run from February 16 through February 18.
During the conference, Whitehouse and Sullivan will engage in bilateral meetings with global leaders. Whitehouse is set to discuss topics like Ukraine reconstruction and climate change-related security threats. Sullivan will address extremism and authoritarianism at events hosted by different organizations.
On Friday evening, Whitehouse will deliver a keynote address at the John McCain Dissertation Award Ceremony. The award honors achievements in transatlantic relations. Additionally, he will participate in public events including a panel on corruption which will be livestreamed.
