U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska has introduced legislation aimed at reversing electric vehicle mandates established during the Biden administration. The proposed Freedom to Haul Act seeks to prevent the implementation of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) "Greenhouse Gas Emissions Standards for Heavy-Duty Vehicles – Phase 3" rule, which Sullivan argues acts as an electric vehicle mandate on the trucking industry.
Senator Sullivan criticized these mandates, stating, "The delusional and costly Biden-era EV mandates are not only disastrous for our economy, they are also completely impractical in rural states—like Alaska—which has extremely cold temperatures and communities separated by thousands of miles where reliable transportation is a matter of life and death."
Sullivan emphasized that President Trump had previously revoked these mandates via executive order and noted his colleagues' support in legislating against them: "My colleagues and I are backing President Trump’s action with legislation to overturn these ludicrous rules and ensure that our truckers can continue to reliably haul and deliver the goods and services that Americans and Alaskans rely on."
The act has garnered support from several organizations, including the Alaska Trucking Association, American Trucking Association, and Americans for Prosperity. The Alaska Trucking Association expressed appreciation for Sullivan's efforts: “We deeply appreciate Senator Sullivan’s introduction of the Freedom to Haul Act... It’s essential that we pursue ambitious environmental goals while maintaining flexibility.”
The American Trucking Association echoed similar sentiments about federal emissions standards needing to be balanced: "ATA is grateful to Senator Sullivan for introducing the Freedom to Haul Act."
Americans for Prosperity highlighted the necessity of traditional fuel-powered transportation in remote regions like Alaska: “Senator Dan Sullivan understands that Alaskans require diesel and petrol-powered modes of transportation... We applaud the introduction of the 'Freedom to Haul Act.'"
Additional legislation included in this package was introduced by Senators Mike Crapo, Markwayne Mullin, and Mike Lee. These bills focus on preserving consumer choice in automotive markets, preventing regulations seen as favoring electric vehicles over traditional engines.
