U.S. Senators Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski have announced the recognition of February 16 as "Elizabeth Peratrovich Day" through a Senate resolution. This national observance celebrates the contributions of Elizabeth Peratrovich, a significant figure in Alaska's civil rights history, who was instrumental in the passage of the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945 by the Alaska Territorial Legislature. This act preceded the federal Civil Rights Act by nearly two decades.
Senator Sullivan expressed admiration for Peratrovich's impact, stating, "Elizabeth Peratrovich changed Alaska’s history—and our country’s history—for the better, fighting tirelessly for racial equality decades before the passage of the national Civil Rights Act in Congress." He highlighted her role during a period when Alaska Native people faced routine discrimination and emphasized her lasting influence on future generations advocating against injustice.
Senator Murkowski also praised Peratrovich's legacy, noting her efforts to integrate public schools and secure voting rights for Alaska Natives. She remarked, "Whether it be her work to integrate public schools, laying the groundwork for ANCSA, or securing the right to vote for Alaska Natives, Elizabeth Peratrovich left an indelible mark on Alaska’s history."
This marks the third consecutive year that Elizabeth Peratrovich Day will receive national recognition.
