U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan recently honored Kathlene Rowell, a long-serving member of his Alaska staff, on the Senate floor. Rowell is departing after nearly 15 years of service. During her tenure as deputy state director, she was known for her work ethic and integrity. Senator Sullivan recognized her as part of his "Alaskan of the Week" series.
Senator Sullivan spoke highly of Rowell's contributions: "Her title in the office has been deputy State director, but she has been so much more than that." He highlighted her role in keeping his team cohesive throughout his time in office.
Rowell moved to Alaska from Chicago at age three and grew up in Eagle River. She attended Chugiak High School and later graduated from Alaska Pacific University. Her early career included working in the parks division at the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), where she first met Sullivan when he was commissioner.
Reflecting on their initial meeting, Sullivan recalled Rowell's memorable elevator pitch that led to her hiring: "I believe I have the qualities, the hard work, the ethics, the commitment to excellence to be your special assistant."
Rowell played a significant role in various initiatives during her time at DNR and later on Sullivan's Senate campaign team. After helping him win election in 2014, she continued working as deputy state director in his office.
Sullivan emphasized the importance of staff like Rowell who handle constituent services and navigate complex federal agencies: "Since I have been in office, our Alaska staff has worked on more than 12,000 of these cases."
Colleagues praised Rowell's leadership and dedication. Carrie Keil described her as "the captain of the ship," while Margaret Sharpe called her "our hero" and Elaina Spraker noted that she had never worked with anyone more skilled.
As Rowell transitions to a new position at a credit union in Anchorage, Sullivan expressed gratitude for her service: "We definitely would not have gotten this far without her."
