U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has voiced his support for significant reforms at the Department of Defense. In an interview on "Sunday Night in America" with Trey Gowdy on Fox News, Sullivan emphasized the need to refocus on the Pentagon's core mission: winning wars and maintaining military lethality.
"We need to get back to the core mission of the Department of Defense: That's lethality, that's winning wars, that's peace through strength," Sullivan stated. He criticized what he described as misplaced priorities under the Biden administration, citing a focus on issues like climate change and transgender surgery over military readiness.
Sullivan also discussed President Trump's national security team and praised its efforts to restore deterrence against America's adversaries. "I think it's looking very strong in that regard," he commented about Trump's Cabinet picks.
In his conversation with Gowdy, Sullivan underscored the importance of the Senate's advice and consent role in confirming presidential nominees. He expressed belief that while presidents should generally have their chosen Cabinets, it is crucial that these officials are highly qualified.
"The advice and consent process has really served America very well for over 200 years," Sullivan remarked. He added that ongoing dialogue between senators and the president-elect is beneficial for selecting suitable candidates not only for Cabinet positions but also for other key roles within government departments.
Sullivan reiterated his call for reform at the Pentagon, stressing a return to its fundamental objectives. "We need to get back to the mission of the Pentagon, which is to win our nation's wars and create the most lethal force in the world to deter war," he concluded.
