U.S. Senators Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski have expressed their support for the Department of Energy's recent allocation of up to $125.1 million towards five energy development projects in Alaska. This funding is part of the Energy Improvement in Rural or Remote Areas (ERA) program, which was co-authored by Murkowski as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021.
"Alaska is an all-of-the-above energy powerhouse," stated Senator Sullivan. He emphasized the importance of utilizing Alaska's renewable energy potential to address the high costs associated with diesel fuel in rural areas. The investment aims to fund various energy infrastructures such as hydroelectric facilities, battery storage, and transmission lines across several Alaskan communities including Chignik Bay, Old Harbor, Nulato, Huslia, Kaltag, Grayling, Anvik, Shageluk, Holy Cross, Angoon, and villages in the Northwest Arctic Borough.
Senator Murkowski highlighted her focus on ensuring cleaner and more affordable energy for Alaska while crafting the bipartisan infrastructure law. "I see the opportunities we have to utilize more of our local resources," she said. She acknowledged Secretary Granholm's role in recognizing Alaska's needs and awarding more projects and funding than any other state. These investments are expected to create jobs, reduce emissions, increase renewable resource usage, and lower electricity bills.
The bipartisan infrastructure law designated $1 billion for the ERA program to enhance resilience and affordability of energy systems in communities with populations under 10,000 people nationwide. The selected projects will advance hydropower resources development along with solar energy solutions and other technologies.
Murkowski played a significant role in developing much of the energy title within this legislation during her tenure as Chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
To date, approximately $7.4 billion from this infrastructure law has been announced for Alaska involving over 1,600 projects statewide.
