U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan from Alaska has expressed concerns over the Biden administration's national security policies, describing them as "not serious" and attributing global instability to perceived weaknesses. During an appearance on CBS News' "Face The Nation," Sullivan highlighted ongoing discussions in Congress about national security legislation aimed at strengthening America's defense capabilities.
Sullivan criticized proposed cuts to the Department of Defense and Homeland Security budgets, suggesting these reductions have weakened the nation's military readiness. He emphasized the need for a strategic response to what he termed a "new era of authoritarian aggression," involving leaders like Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin.
"The Biden administration with regard to national security has not been serious," Sullivan stated. He noted that cuts in defense spending have been consistent under this administration, arguing for increased investment in domestic industrial capacity to produce weapons.
Margaret Brennan, host of "Face The Nation," questioned Sullivan about Republican support for aid to Ukraine amidst their ammunition shortages. Sullivan responded by supporting a national security supplemental package, emphasizing its role in rebuilding America's industrial capacity for weapon production.
"60 percent goes into our ability to build weapons for America," Sullivan explained, detailing allocations for nuclear submarines and various munitions. He argued that such investments should unify Republicans rather than divide them.
Sullivan also contrasted current policies with those of the Trump administration, which he praised for projecting strength and enhancing military readiness. He recalled actions taken during Trump's tenure that bolstered U.S. defense presence abroad and increased defense spending.
The interview reflects ongoing debates within Congress regarding national security priorities and foreign aid amid complex international challenges.
