U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, along with Representative Mary Peltola, have expressed their approval following the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' announcement regarding a Project Partnership Agreement (PPA) for the Port of Nome expansion project. This agreement involves constructing a new deep-water basin and legally binds the government and the State of Alaska to carry out the project. The signing ceremony took place in Nome.

The bipartisan infrastructure law has allocated $250 million for this construction effort.

Senator Lisa Murkowski remarked, "This agreement is a significant milestone for the Port of Nome, and it brings us one step closer to a deep-water port in the Arctic that provides for trade, commerce, tourism, and national security." She emphasized her anticipation for the project's first phase to commence and urged President Biden to request additional funds needed to complete it in his FY 2025 budget.

Senator Dan Sullivan highlighted his role on key Senate committees in securing provisions that increased federal cost-sharing for the project. He stated, "The Port of Nome... will be positioned to play a critical role in ensuring the United States is a leader in the Arctic region." He noted its importance for national security and economic opportunities in Northwest Alaska.

Representative Mary Peltola pointed out that "the expanded port of Nome will be able to handle more and larger vessels," which could lower living costs, support search and rescue operations, and create jobs. She expressed pride in supporting this initiative during last year's budget process.

Nome Mayor John Handeland described executing the PPA as an honor: "Not only is this of great significance for our community... it is an historic moment for America." He emphasized its importance for resupply services to national security fleets operating in the Arctic while also enhancing transportation support throughout the region.
