U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska has issued a statement regarding the recent retaliatory strikes by U.S. forces against Iranian proxies in Syria and Iraq. The strikes were in response to over 160 attacks on U.S. forces in the Middle East since October, including a drone attack on January 28 that resulted in the deaths of three U.S. service members and injuries to several others.
Senator Sullivan criticized the Biden administration's handling of these attacks, stating, "The Biden administration’s response to these attacks—delayed for almost a week, and now signaling where our military will and will not strike—has been disastrous to the point of being dangerous." He suggested that a more effective approach would involve sending a strong message to Iran's leadership about consequences if their proxies continue aggressive actions.
Sullivan emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy that includes non-military measures, particularly advocating for the reimposition of sanctions on Iran's oil and gas sector as was done during the Trump administration. "The Biden administration needs a sustained, multi-faceted strategy that also focuses on non-military actions—in particular, reimposing the comprehensive sanctions against the Iranian oil and gas sector that proved to be so effective during the Trump administration," he stated.
