U.S. Senators Dan Sullivan and Richard Blumenthal have raised concerns about the safety of Iranian-American human rights activist Masih Alinejad. In a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the senators highlighted threats against Alinejad and urged for enhanced security measures.
Alinejad is known for her criticism of the Iranian regime's human rights record, particularly its gender apartheid policy. The senators emphasized that "there have been 31 threats on her life and two actual attempts to kill her, on American soil."
The letter expressed dissatisfaction with the suggestion from the Biden administration that Alinejad enter witness protection. The senators stated, "We can do much better by her." They encouraged Secretary Blinken to meet with Alinejad personally to understand her concerns.
Senator Sullivan had previously met with Alinejad in Washington D.C. in September.
