U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan has criticized the Biden-Harris administration's approach to Iran, calling for a return to Trump-era policies. In an opinion piece published in the Wall Street Journal, Sullivan argued that the current administration's policies have led to a more powerful Iran and a more dangerous world.
“It’s hard to deny that the world is more dangerous today than when he [Biden] became president,” Sen. Sullivan wrote. He urged President Biden to use his upcoming speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to condemn Iran and call for sanctions against its regime. “In his speech he should call on the U.N. to condemn and impose sanctions on the Iranian terrorist regime for acting as the architect of chaos throughout the Middle East and Ukraine.”
Sullivan also suggested that President Biden should denounce antisemitism within the U.N., criticize insufficient condemnation of Hamas, and demand that Hamas be declared a terrorist organization by the U.N.
Senator Sullivan has consistently warned about what he sees as weaknesses in the Biden-Harris administration's Middle East policy. He advocates for reinstating Trump-era sanctions aimed at deterring Iran and its proxies.
“Before Mr. Biden took office, under the Trump administration’s sanctions, Iran’s oil exports in 2020 were reduced to about 200,000 barrels a day from 2.7 million,” Sullivan noted, adding that these measures significantly impacted Iran's economy.
Despite raising these issues with President Biden and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan last year, Senator Sullivan claims no action has been taken.
He highlighted incidents where Iranian-backed forces targeted U.S. Navy ships but were not met with decisive responses from senior administration officials due to concerns over escalation.
Senator Sullivan also criticized what he described as appeasement regarding Iran's human rights record, particularly concerning women’s rights violations following Mahsa Amini's death two years ago.
“The most outrageous example of appeasement has been the Biden-Harris administration’s relative silence on the Iranian regime’s atrocious human-rights record,” he wrote.
Sullivan concluded by emphasizing that appeasement does not work and only invites further aggression from adversaries like Iran.
