People may see smoke today (Monday) from prescribed burning of woody debris piles created to reduce the risk of wildfires around City of Fairbanks, City of North Pole, Eielson Air Force Base and Salcha. The Alaska DNR - Division of Forestry & Fire Protection - DOF and the BLM Alaska Fire Service are taking advantage favorable conditions to burn piles created as part of wildfire mitigation programs in the Interior. DOF is working in the Cripple Creek area southwest of Fairbanks today and BLM AFS is in the Yukon Training Area north of Eielson Air Force Base and the Tanana Flats Training Area (TFTA) near Salcha. Firefighters will monitor these burns until they are completely out.
While the BLM AFS will complete ignitions on piles in the TFTA today, the piles should continue to smolder and produce progressively less smoke for the next 1-2 weeks.
BLM AFS will continue prescribed burning on military lands in Interior Alaska through the end of the month. Prescribed fires are ignited only after a thorough analysis of fuels, weather, terrain and location and other factors. This analysis identifies strict parameters and safety precautions for the #RxBurn process.
