Historic Lower Yukon Wildfire Forces Evacuations from St. Mary’s and Pitkas Point

Wf

Update 7:57 AM: YKHC is arranging appropriate flights for the evacuation of the vulnerable population. SEOC has worked with the Alaska National Guard to open the Bethel armory as a shelter. SEOC has coordinated with the Alaska State Troopers as a precaution. Multiple crews, smoke jumpers, and suppression aircraft are working the fire.

A wildfire was burning less than eight miles from St Mary’s and Pitkas Point yesterday evening. The wind was continuing to spread the flames closer to the villages.

As of last night, The Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said workers at the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corp. Sub-Regional Clinic in St. Mary’s are creating a list of people who the clinic considers vulnerable and is calling them, asking if they want to evacuate. Children, Elders and vulnerable people were evacuated first. Please stay tuned for more updates throughout the day.
