Shop classes are an important part of our student’s hands-on learning experience. The school district recognizes the invaluable skills these classes provide to our students and families. We strive to provide an excellent learning experience for our students that prepares them for a successful future. To do so, we must ensure our classes are protected and industry standards are followed.
The district was informed by our insurance provider that the use of personal vehicles as teaching tools imposes liability on the district that is not covered under the current insurance policy. On April 21, students and staff were notified that personal/private vehicles are not allowed to be worked on in class.
There should be little to no impact on our students' education as donated and district vehicles are provided and available for use. Most schools have already been operating their classes with no private vehicles being used.
Our automotive programs are working on becoming ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified and these changes will have no impact on that process. The ASE certification will create excellent opportunities for our students to move seamlessly into careers in the automotive industry. This is a great learning opportunity for students to learn the business side of the automotive industry and the importance of carrying the required insurance in their shops to protect their customers as well as themselves. The district is actively working with the Fairbanks North Star Borough to explore options that follow both curriculum and insurance requirements.
