City of Fairbanks issued the following announcement on March 3.
On March 2, 2022, the city’s building inspector calculated the snow load on one of our buildings at 37 pounds per square foot (psf). Snow load varies throughout the city and borough and can depend on several factors, including how well your roof drains.
Homes built to city code after 1996 are built to withstand at least 50psf, but city code only applies to homes within the city of Fairbanks. If you are living in an older home or are unsure how much snow your roof can handle, it would be a good idea to clear the snow from your roof and gain peace of mind.
