Fairbanks North Star Borough School District issued the following announcement on February 28.
New Elementary School Boundaries Announced for 2022-23 School Year
The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District has updated the boundary lines for Fairbanks-area elementary schools, which will change where some students go to school beginning in the 2022-23 school year. The new boundaries follow the Board of Education’s decision to close three elementary schools and move sixth-grade students to middle schools. There are no boundary adjustments for middle or high schools.
“There are many changes and adjustments coming to our district next year,” said Chief School Administrator Karen Melin. “Our significant budget challenges are forcing us to rethink, and in some cases redesign, how we provide the best education possible to our students.”
The school efficiency efforts, approved by the Board of Education Feb. 1, require the district to redraw boundary lines to reflect the loss of three schools and to provide the best services possible to our students and families.
The boundary changes were determined based on geography, school building capacities, impact on economically disadvantaged students, and potential for neighborhood growth. The elementary boundary changes will impact approximately 760 students due to schools closing and building capacity adjustments.
The district did not change boundaries for any middle or high schools. If a student will be attending a new elementary school next year, it will not change the student’s designated middle school. Out of attendance area students will also not be impacted, unless they currently attend Anderson, Joy, or Nordale Elementary.
