U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan has criticized the Biden administration for its approach to oil sanctions, claiming it favors Iran over Alaska. The senator, who is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, expressed concern over reports that the administration plans to restrict development on more than 10 million acres in Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve (NPR-A). This area was designated by Congress for resource development.
Senator Sullivan emphasized the need for a stronger stance against Iranian aggression and urged enforcement of Trump-era sanctions on Iran. “The Biden Administration is Sanctioning Alaska More than Terrorist Regimes,” he stated during an interview on CNBC’s “Last Call.”
In conversation with Brian Sullivan, the senator highlighted his belief that Israel should have the right to retaliate if necessary. He criticized President Biden for allegedly discouraging further retaliation by Israel.
Sullivan argued that current policies are detrimental to American energy security and national interests. He pointed out that while restrictions are being placed on Alaskan oil production, similar measures are not being enforced against Iran or Venezuela. “They are sanctioning my state, my constituents, a lot more than they are sanctioning the terrorist regimes in Tehran or Venezuela,” he said.
Brian Sullivan noted reports suggesting potential delays or shelving of these rule changes due to concerns about rising oil prices. Senator Sullivan clarified that NPR-A is not a wilderness area but was set aside for national security purposes decades ago.
The senator also criticized recent dealings with Venezuela, where sanctions were lifted in exchange for promises of fair elections that have not been fulfilled. He described this as an “upside-down policy” that unfairly targets American oil production while allowing foreign regimes more leniency.
