U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska has expressed his views on the recent verdict in the New York jury trial involving former President Donald Trump. In a statement, Sullivan remarked on the implications of the conviction for both the nation and its legal system.
“This is a very sad day for America and the rule of law,” said Sullivan. He emphasized that convicting a former president who is also a leading candidate for the upcoming presidential election could set a “dangerous precedent” and likened it to actions typical of a “banana republic.”
Sullivan criticized the case as being politically motivated, attributing it to “a far-left, partisan local prosecutor who campaigned on getting Trump.” He referenced an old Soviet saying to underscore his point: “Show me the man, I’ll show you the crime.”
The senator called for Trump’s exoneration on appeal and stressed that decisions regarding leadership should be made through elections rather than what he termed as “unprecedented political prosecution.” Sullivan concluded by expressing confidence in public discernment, stating, “I trust that the American people will see through this gross abuse of our justice system.”
