U.S. Senators Dan Sullivan and Tom Cotton, alongside 25 other Senate Republicans, have formally requested that Attorney General Merrick Garland and Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona take immediate action to address antisemitic incidents on college campuses. In a letter sent to the officials, the senators emphasized the urgency of restoring order in universities where Jewish students are reportedly being targeted by pro-Hamas groups.

Senator Sullivan expressed his concern over the situation, stating, “America’s so-called elite universities used to be a positive source of our nation’s power, strength and influence. No longer. Turn on any TV today, and you will see many of these once-respected institutions being overrun by antisemitic mobs threatening Jewish students and shouting their support for terrorist organizations hellbent on murdering Jews and destroying America and the state of Israel.”

The letter urges federal authorities to prosecute those involved in violent acts against Jewish students, revoke visas of foreign nationals participating in such activities, and hold university leaders accountable for not protecting their students. The senators also called for an update from Garland and Cardona by April 24 regarding efforts to safeguard Jewish students.

The issue was highlighted by recent events at institutions like Columbia University and Yale University, where Jewish students faced threats or violence during protests. The senators stressed that rioting violates federal law and called for adherence to laws prohibiting violence based on heritage.

President Biden had previously condemned antisemitism in a statement; however, the senators insist that tangible actions must follow such declarations. They urged federal departments to enforce laws protecting Jewish students effectively.
