The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service announced on April 1 that it will hold a three-day certified pesticide applicator training workshop from April 21 to April 23. The sessions will be conducted statewide via Zoom, with classes running each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This training is intended to help participants prepare for and pass the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation exam, which is required for anyone in the state who purchases, uses, or sells restricted-use pesticides and herbicides. Certification is also mandatory for those acting as pesticide consultants, engaging in commercial or contract use of pesticides, or supervising their use at public locations. Further details about certification categories are available on the Alaska DEC Pesticide Control Program website.

A $75 fee covers study materials that can be picked up by appointment at various Extension offices across Anchorage, Palmer, Soldotna, Fairbanks, and Delta Junction. For those residing in other communities, materials can be mailed for an additional $25 fee. Registration can be completed online through an electronic form or by visiting https://bit.ly/PSEPtraining. Organizers recommend that participants review the provided materials and necessary math skills before attending.

The registration deadline is set for April 14. Individuals seeking more information about course content may contact Phil Kaspari at pnkaspari@alaska.edu or call 907-895-4215.

Accommodation requests related to disabilities should be submitted five business days prior to the event by contacting Alda Norris at amnorris2@alaska.edu or calling 907-474-7120. Language access services are also available free of charge upon request for individuals with limited English proficiency.

The program receives support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
