The Nanooks women’s basketball team announced on Apr. 6 the signing of Ava Wiley, a guard from Anaheim, California, who will join the team for the 2026-27 season. Wiley comes to the Nanooks from Buena Park High School in Buena Park, California.
Wiley’s addition is seen as a significant step for the program as it prepares for future seasons. The coaching staff highlighted her skills and potential impact on the court.
“We’re excited to welcome Ava to the Nanook family,” head coach Michael Ricks said. “She has a strong work ethic and approaches the game the right way. Ava has a really good feel and is a terrific shooter with deep range and a quick release. Her ability to space the floor will make her a valuable addition to our program.”
During her senior year at Buena Park High School, Wiley averaged 13 points per game while shooting 45 percent from the field. She made 85 three-point shots at a rate of 37 percent, setting a Golden Empire League record for made threes. In addition, she averaged four assists and 1.5 steals per game and was named Golden Empire League MVP.
Wiley expressed enthusiasm about joining Alaska’s program: “This Cali kid loves new adventures, so I’ll be taking my talents to Alaska! I’m super excited to announce my commitment to UAF! I want to thank Coach Ricks for believing in me and presenting me with this amazing opportunity! I’d also like to thank all of my past teammates and coaches, because without them none of this would be possible. I can’t wait to start this new chapter in life, and also on the court! Thank you all!”
Wiley is Alaska’s second signing ahead of next season, with more signings expected in coming months.
