Nanooks secure shutout win over Briercrest in exhibition hockey game

The Alaska Nanooks men’s ice hockey team achieved an 8-0 exhibition win over Briercrest on Saturday, September 28, at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks. This result marks their second consecutive shutout in preseason play.

During the game, Alaska controlled play throughout all three periods. Fyodor Nikolayenya opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 8:38 in the first period. Misha Danylov followed with another goal at 11:27, and Michael Citara scored a second power-play goal to close out the first period.

In the second period, Trent Penner increased the lead to 4-0 early on. Nikolayenya added his second goal late in the period. The third period saw Davis Borozinskis score less than three minutes in, followed by Jhett Larson who made it 6-0 after capitalizing on a rebound. Nikolayenya completed his hat trick with another power-play goal late in the game.

Alaska finished with eight goals and fifteen assists for a total of twenty-three points. The team was successful on all three of its power plays and killed both penalties faced. Goaltender Calvin Vachon stopped all twelve shots he faced, while Alaska registered forty-seven shots on goal.

Nikolayenya led individual performances with four points—three goals and one assist. Larson contributed three points with one goal and two assists.

The Nanooks will begin their regular season next weekend against Minnesota Duluth, with games scheduled for October 3 and 4 at 7:07 p.m.
