U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan recently paid tribute to Jay Ramras, a Fairbanks native, recognizing him as the “Alaskan of the Week” in a speech on the Senate floor. Ramras, known for his long-term contributions to the community through historical preservation and philanthropy, caught Sullivan’s admiration for his ongoing dedication to Alaska.

Sullivan remarked, “It is Thursday here in the U.S. Senate, and it is time for a great tradition—I think one of the greatest traditions in the history of the U.S. Senate. It is called ‘The Alaskan of the Week’ speech, which I try to give most Thursdays.”

Ramras is recognized for his entrepreneurial spirit, starting with a chicken wing restaurant at 22 years of age, expanding his ventures to include multiple eateries and the well-known Pike’s Landing in Fairbanks. His interest in history led to significant efforts in preserving local landmarks, including working with Fairbanks North Star Borough Historic Preservation Commission for the National Register of Historic Places for Pike’s Landing.

Sullivan noted, “It was so important to me that we rescue Lloyd Pike from obscurity,” as an example of Jay’s commitment to preserving history.

In addition to his business ventures, Ramras’ impact on the community covers cultural and charitable contributions. He facilitated the establishment of a new synagogue in Fairbanks, highlighting his investment in community development and cultural preservation. “He is a great philanthropist in Fairbanks—a key player in Fairbanks Food Bank and doing so many other things in terms of philanthropy.”

The accolade reflects Ramras’ passion for preserving Alaska’s history while fostering a sense of community spirit among its residents. His multifaceted contributions advance the diversification and cultural appreciation within Fairbanks and beyond.
