U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska has secured commitments from Sean Duffy, President Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Transportation, to address several key transportation and infrastructure challenges facing Alaska. During a Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation hearing, Duffy pledged to visit Alaska and support crucial programs.

Senator Sullivan emphasized the unique infrastructure challenges in Alaska, noting its vast size compared to states like Connecticut and Wisconsin but with significantly fewer road miles. “Much of the discussion on infrastructure and transportation in DC talks about rebuilding infrastructure or paving roads,” said Sullivan. He invited Duffy to witness these challenges firsthand by visiting Alaska.

Duffy agreed to visit the state, stating, “I would love to come to Alaska.” Additionally, he committed to supporting the Essential Air Service Program that provides vital air connections for many Alaskan communities not linked by roads. “I have been a supporter and will continue to support Essential Air Service,” Duffy affirmed.

Sullivan also raised concerns about aviation safety due to Alaska’s high accident rates. He urged Duffy’s continued support for the FAA Alaska Aviation Safety Initiative included in this year’s FAA bill with an authorization of up to $25 million annually. In response, Duffy expressed willingness to collaborate on improving safety measures.

The discussion also covered permitting reform under NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act), which Sullivan described as necessary due to lengthy delays affecting projects in Alaska. Duffy acknowledged the complexity of NEPA processes and committed to working with the committee on reforms: “I commit to do what I can…to speed up the process.”
