The Discovery Peak Charter School team from North Pole won first place in the 2026 Alaska Science Olympiad, according to an April 3 announcement. The event took place on March 28 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The tournament brought together twelve student teams from eleven middle schools across Alaska to compete in seventeen events focused on science, technology, engineering and math. Students participated in written exams, laboratory demonstrations and building challenges designed to test both knowledge and practical skills.

As a result of their first-place finish, the DCPS Dinos will advance to the national competition at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles on May 22-23, 2026. The Gilson Middle School Huskies from Valdez placed second, while Aurora Borealis Charter School from Kenai secured third place.

The Alaska Science Olympiad is organized by several institutions including the Alaska National Science Foundation Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), UAF College of Engineering and Mines, UAF College of Natural Science and Mathematics and UAF Makerspace. Sponsors for this year’s event include ConocoPhillips, Alaska 529, the Alaska Blue Economy Center, UAF College of Engineering and Mines, the Alaska IDeA Network of Biological Research Excellence (INBRE), faculty member Brian Rasley and UAF Residence Life.
