Cost of college went up for all students at the University of Alaska Fairbanks

In-state tuition and fees rose 6.3 percent for 2018-19 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Alaska residents paid $6,657 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $395 more than the $6,262 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 203.7 percent more than residents this year, or $20,218. Their price tag grew 5.4 percent from $19,183 in 2017-18.

About 89 percent of the school’s undergraduate population are Alaska residents. About 8 percent are residents of other states and 2 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 84 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 486 students received grants or scholarships totaling $3.6 million and 200 students took out student loans totaling more than $1.4 million.

Including all undergraduates (7,404), 2,958 students used grants or scholarships totaling $19.3 million, and 1,512 students took out $10.5 million in federal student loans.
